ADMISSION

With students coming from 17+ towns and cities, our school is an interdistrict community, a magnet school that brings together diverse points of view and experiences.

New Haven residents can apply to any magnet school in the City, and our Interdistrict Magnet School is open to all Connecticut residents. There are no admission requirements, tests, prerequisites, or tuition for our students.

Families must apply to our school. Students are placed in magnet schools through a school choice process, formerly known as the lottery.

Free transportation is available from most towns.

Step 1: Ask yourself, why Metropolitan?

This is where your high school experience begins. When you enter our building and when you join your classes, you will be welcomed by kind, friendly educators who love what they do. Ask yourself the following questions to get yourself thinking about whether or not Metro is a good fit for you.

Are you familiar with our magnet themes?

Which academic pathway would you like to take electives in?

Would you like to take Spanish, French or Chinese language courses?

Are you curious about our mastery-based learning and assessment practices?

Would you like to get better at public speaking and advocating for yourself through student led conferences and roundtables?

Are you excited about getting involved in extra-curricular activities, AP Courses, and college courses early?

If you become a student here, do you know that you will complete 100+ hours of community service, 1+ internship, and complete a senior portfolio presentation before graduating?

Go through our VIEWBOOK.

If you answered yes to most of these questions, or if you want to learn more, then please consider next steps for admission.

Under regular circumstances, we would offer shadowing and open house opportunities. To help keep our school community safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are offering virtual information sessions, Zoom meetings, and phone calls this academic year. Thank you for understanding. Virtual Information Sessions offers a sense of the possibilities that exist at Metro and a better understanding of how we apply our core values of Innovation, Integrity and Involvement. Speakers include our Magnet Recruitment Specialist, Student Ambassadors, and Teachers from our Signature Pathways.

Also, take a look at the School Explorer Tool. The School Explorer Tool allows families to discover all the exceptional educational opportunities that are available in the New Haven Public Schools. See how the process works for yourself via our new tools: virtual tours, drone flight footage and application simulator. Step 4: Apply online!

An online application will tentatively open on Monday, January 30, 2023. The tentative time frame for submitting your online application is between Monday, January 30 and Monday, February 27, 2023. The tentative release of placement information will take place Monday, April 3, 2023. Students who are offered a placement in the first round will have until Friday, April 15, 2022 to accept the seat. Through the summer, we will move the waiting list in collaboration with the School Choice and Enrollment Office. Those who were offered a placement in the second round have until April 29 to accept.

Step 5: Review results

The results for the fall 2023 enrollment were emailed to applicants on Friday, April 7. Please follow the instructions in the School Choice and Enrollment email that you will received. We will contact students from the waiting list between May and September if there are any seats available.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THOSE WHO ARE OFFERED PLACEMENT:

New Haven’s Office of School Choice and Enrollment processed your application and your name was selected for placement this fall 2023. Their office sent you an email explaining the registration process and requirement to ACCEPT or DECLINE your seat offer by April 26, 2023 at 5:00pm; if you do not meet this deadline, your seat will be administratively declined by the School Choice & Enrollment Office.

There are two ways you can ACCEPT or DECLINE your seat offer. They will not allow any parent or applicant to accept or decline their seat by telephone or email:

  • Option 1: Via your lottery dashboard. Log into your NHPS Guardian account at

https://nhps.schoolmint.com/login. Once you’ve logged in, click “ACCEPT” to accept your child’s placement.

  • Option 2: Visit the Office of School Choice & Enrollment in-person at 54 Meadow Street, New Haven, CT.  We are open to the general public, Monday-Friday 8:30am – 3:30pm

If your child is NOT currently attending a New Haven Public School (e.g., because they are attending a private or charter school), you must complete the 2023-2024 online student registration process at http://www.newhavenmagnetschools.com by April 26, 2023. Please make sure you are registering your child for the 2023-2024 school year. You will need to upload the following documents:

  • Child’s Birth Certificate or Passport

  • Picture I.D. of Parent or Guardian

  • Proof of residency: A signed Lease/ Mortgage statement or (2) current home utility bills (gas, electric, water, phone or cable) that lists the guardian's name and home address used on the school choice application.

Students new to NHPS or coming back to NHPS from a private or charter school, as well as ALL 10th graders, must submit a Health Assessment and Immunization Paperwork to our school nurse this summer, before orientation. You can drop off paperwork in our main office, email it to lauren.chicoski@new-haven.k12.ct.us or fax to (475)220-7705.

If your child is a New Haven resident currently attending a New Haven Public School, you do not need to register. You only need to accept the seat online or in person.

Step 6: Attend Virtual New Student Day & Orientation

New Haven residents who are placed at MBA typically attend a new student day in May.

Out-of-district residents will be contacted over the summer to make sure their final report card and language choices are submitted to our School Counselors by July.

In August, all new students will attend orientation where they will meet Student Ambassadors who will tell them about the first day of school and provide schedules. Please stay tuned for more information on how this will take place.
