With students coming from 17+ towns and cities, our school is an interdistrict community, a magnet school that brings together diverse points of view and experiences.
New Haven residents can apply to any magnet school in the City, and our Interdistrict Magnet School is open to all Connecticut residents. There are no admission requirements, tests, prerequisites, or tuition for our students.
Families must apply to our school. Students are placed in magnet schools through a school choice process, formerly known as the lottery.
Free transportation is available from most towns.
Step 1: Ask yourself, why Metropolitan?
This is where your high school experience begins. When you enter our building and when you join your classes, you will be welcomed by kind, friendly educators who love what they do. Ask yourself the following questions to get yourself thinking about whether or not Metro is a good fit for you.
Are you familiar with our magnet themes?
Which academic pathway would you like to take electives in?
Would you like to take Spanish, French or Chinese language courses?
Are you curious about our mastery-based learning and assessment practices?
Would you like to get better at public speaking and advocating for yourself through student led conferences and roundtables?
Are you excited about getting involved in extra-curricular activities, AP Courses, and college courses early?
If you become a student here, do you know that you will complete 100+ hours of community service, 1+ internship, and complete a senior portfolio presentation before graduating?
Go through our VIEWBOOK.
If you answered yes to most of these questions, or if you want to learn more, then please consider next steps for admission.

Step 3: Attend an Admissions Event
Under regular circumstances, we would offer shadowing and open house opportunities. To help keep our school community safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are offering virtual information sessions, Zoom meetings, and phone calls this academic year. Thank you for understanding. Virtual Information Sessions offers a sense of the possibilities that exist at Metro and a better understanding of how we apply our core values of Innovation, Integrity and Involvement. Speakers include our Magnet Recruitment Specialist, Student Ambassadors, and Teachers from our Signature Pathways.
Also, take a look at the School Explorer Tool. The School Explorer Tool allows families to discover all the exceptional educational opportunities that are available in the New Haven Public Schools. See how the process works for yourself via our new tools: virtual tours, drone flight footage and application simulator. Explore your chances of assignments to your favorite programs using application data from prior years via our application simulator. See our gorgeous building with the drone flight footage. Walk the halls of our school with a virtual tour to get a better sense of the space where your child will succeed.

Step 4: Apply online!
An online application will tentatively open on Monday, January 30, 2023. The tentative time frame for submitting your online application is between Monday, January 30 and Monday, February 27, 2023. The tentative release of placement information will take place Monday, April 3, 2023. Students who are offered a placement in the first round will have until Friday, April 15, 2022 to accept the seat. Through the summer, we will move the waiting list in collaboration with the School Choice and Enrollment Office. Those who were offered a placement in the second round have until April 29 to accept.
Step 5: Review results
The tentative release of results for the fall 2023 enrollment will be April 3, 2023. Please follow the instructions in the School Choice and Enrollment results email that you will receive. We will contact students from the waiting list between May and September if there are any seats available.
THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT APPLICANTS HAD TO DO LAST YEAR. THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY CHANGE.
It is critically important that all students offered a seat in our building ACCEPT or DECLINE their seat no later than April 22, 2022 at 5:00pm. If your child is NOT currently attending a New Haven Public School, you must complete the online registration process, as well. If you do not meet this deadline, your child's seat will be administratively declined by the School Choice & Enrollment Office.
Step 1: Log in to your parent account (School Choice dashboard)
Step 2: Click "Accept your Student's Placement"
Step 3: Click "Accept or Decline"
You may also email your intent to accept or decline your child’s seat to email@example.com. Please include your secure PIN number and use the email account you listed on your child’s application.
A third option to accept or decline placement is to visit the Office of School Choice & Enrollment in-person at 54 Meadow Street, 1st floor. They are open Monday-Friday 8:30am-3:30pm.
Step 4: Respond to this email to let me know of your decision. Let us know what math class your child is currently completing and which language course they would prefer to take at Metro. We offer Spanish, French and Chinese; let us know of their first and second language preferences.
Step 5: All new students entering or re-entering, and all new suburban entries, are required to follow the registration steps below. In other words, if your child is NOT currently enrolled in a New Haven Public School (e.g. private or charter schools) you must also register your child with New Haven Public Schools.
All new students entering or re-entering New Haven Public Schools will be required to register. Our registration process is fully online and can be accessed at www.newhavenmagnetschools.com. You will be required to upload all necessary documents, like child's birth certificate, picture ID of parent, proof of residency document.
New Suburban entries are required to have an Interdistrict letter signed by their home district.
Step 6: As part of Metro's enrollment, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information.
Your first and second language preferences: Spanish, French, and Chinese are the options
The math course you are currently completing
We ask that you send a copy of your child’s final report card or transcript, especially if you are new to NHPS. This will help us make the class schedule.
Step 6: Attend Virtual New Student Day & Orientation
New Haven residents who are placed at MBA typically attend a new student day in May.
Out-of-district residents will be contacted over the summer to make sure their final report card and language choices are submitted to our School Counselors by July.
In August, all new students will attend orientation where they will meet Student Ambassadors who will tell them about the first day of school and provide schedules. Please stay tuned for more information on how this will take place.
