ADMISSION

With students coming from 17+ towns and cities, our school is an interdistrict community, a magnet school that brings together diverse points of view and experiences.

New Haven residents can apply to any magnet school in the City, and our Interdistrict Magnet School is open to all Connecticut residents. There are no admission requirements, tests, prerequisites, or tuition for our students.

Families must apply to our school. Students are placed in magnet schools through a school choice process, formerly known as the lottery.

Free transportation is available from most towns.

Step 1: Ask yourself, why Metropolitan?

This is where your high school experience begins. When you enter our building and when you join your classes, you will be welcomed by kind, friendly educators who love what they do. Ask yourself the following questions to get yourself thinking about whether or not Metro is a good fit for you.

Are you familiar with our magnet themes?

Which academic pathway would you like to take electives in?

Would you like to take Spanish, Arabic or Chinese language courses?

Are you curious about our mastery-based learning and assessment practices?

Would you like to get better at public speaking and advocating for yourself through student led conferences and roundtables?

Are you excited about getting involved in extra-curricular activities, concurrent enrollment courses, and college courses after school while in high school?

If you become a student here, do you know that you will complete 50+ hours of community service, 1+ internship, and complete a senior portfolio presentation before graduating?

If you answered yes to most of these questions, or if you want to learn more, then please consider next steps for admission.

View a one pager or presentation for a school overview.

Step 2: Review the admission timeline

Step 5: Review results

Initial placement results were released on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. The Enrollment Office notified applicants of placement or wait list status by email. Please check your inbox and spam/junk folder.

Applicants offered placement in round 1 have until Friday, April 10 at 3:00 p.m. to accept and/or register to secure their placement. If you miss the deadline to accept your placement, the Office of School Choice and Enrollment will remove you from the seat and pull up from the waiting list.

You will also receive a welcome packet in the mail, an email from Lauren Chicoski, Magnet School Recruitment Coordinator, and an automated phone call/text. We will contact students from the waiting list between May and September if any seats become available.

STEP 1: ACCEPT YOUR SEAT

There are two ways to accept your seat.

  1. Log in to your Application Parent Portal and click “ACCEPT.”

  2. To accept the seat in person, visit the Office of School Choice and Enrollment at 54 Meadow Street, New Haven. They are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

STEP 2: REGISTER YOUR STUDENT

*Skip to step 3 if your student currently attends a New Haven Public School.

You must complete a new registration if your student:

  • Does not currently go to a New Haven Public School.

  • Goes to a private or charter school right now.

There are two parts to registration. Before you can submit registration forms, the New Haven Health Department must review and clear your student’s health records.

  1. HEALTH RECORDS: Upload your student’s most recent physical health paperwork and immunization records to the Health Document Portal. This portal is different from the Application Parent Portal where you accepted. These records must be dated on or after August 31, 2025.

  • A current Physical Exam and updated Immunization Records can be uploaded in the Health Document Portal.

  • The Health Department will review the documents and notify you via email (within 24-48 hours) if your student is cleared to proceed.

  • If your student’s records do not meet Department of Health requirements, you must meet those requirements before proceeding to the registration forms.

  • Please contact the New Haven Health Department at (203) 946-8181 with any questions.

  1. REGISTRATION FORMS: There are two ways to submit registration forms. Once you receive the health clearance email, you can visit the Office of School Choice & Enrollment to complete the registration in person, or you may complete registration online via the online registration portal.

In Person: The Office of School Choice & Enrollment is located at 54 Meadows Street, New Haven, and is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Bring with you the documents listed below.

Online Registration Portal: The registration portal is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and is closed on Saturday and Sunday. Fill out the NHPS Registration and upload these documents:

  1. Child's Birth Certificate (long form) or Active Passport.

  2. Valid Photo ID of the registering New Haven resident parent or legal guardian (like a driver’s license)

  3. To verify your home address, you must provide two (2) documents proving your primary home address in New Haven.

Primary Proof (submit one of the following):

  • An active Lease signed by the landowner, or

  • A Mortgage or Deed that clearly shows the parent/guardian's name and primary address.

Secondary Proof (submit one of the following, dated within the last 60 calendar days):

  • Utility Bill: electric, water, gas, sewer, cable/internet bill, or an appropriate transfer of services from the utility provider, or

  • Official State Documents: Active motor vehicle insurance, SNAP documentation, or a health insurance benefits statement from the State of CT (e.g., Husky or Access Health).

STEP 3: COMPLETE THE CHOICE RESIDENCY FORM

If you live outside of New Haven, you must fill out a Choice Residency Form. This is required by both your hometown school district and New Haven Public Schools. Even if your student currently attends an interdistrict magnet school, you are still required to complete the choice residency form. Suburban families have to complete it every year with their home district. The Choice Residency form must be turned in by Friday, April 10, 2026, at 3:00 p.m.

  1. Fill out the top part of the form yourself.

  2. Contact the school district where you live (your "hometown district"). They must sign the bottom part of the form.

  3. Submit the completed form to the Office of School Choice & Enrollment.

STEP 4: FINAL SCHOOL PLACEMENT

Once you have completed the registration and provided all necessary documentation, you will receive an email regarding your child’s enrollment within 7 business days. This email will include your child’s school placement and start date.

REMINDERS

Everything must be finished by Friday, April 10, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. If you do not finish the steps by then, the Office of School Choice and Enrollment will remove the placement offer.

The Admissions Team at Metro looks forward to connecting with you. Please feel free to email or call us at (475) 220-7700.
